Little Ships

We have been learning about the evacuation of Dunkirk during World War II.



In May 1940 a huge British Expeditionary force of 250,000 men was sent to France to help fight the powerful German advance. The British and French forces became surrounded by the Germans and forced towards the sea and the town of Dunkirk. What would they do? They had three choices - surrender, fight to death or escape! 338,226 troops were evacuated from Dunkirk between 27 May and 4 June 1940. 933 ships took part in the evacuation named operation Dynamo and were called Little Ships.

In Formula Base we are creating a model of Dunkirk. We have looked at pictures of Dunkirk and the Little Ships and are using what we have seen to build the beach scene using various techniques to create the sand dunes, beach and sea. We are also building an armada of Little Ships using junk modelling and paper construction techniques.
