Year 5 has been quite enjoyable as we zoomed through the whole year! We learnt about loads of things and the best thing I have improved on is my Maths. Also, in the year, because we were doing so many different things my favorite subjects changed every week! My favorite topic was WWII and the best book was "There's a boy in the girls bathroom!". I think year 5 is a memorable year. I wish this year would never ever end! Thank you Mrs Collin, Mrs Thornton and everyone else who who helped out this year!

On the 3rd July we had a school BBQ, it was really fun, there was loads of stalls including all of these:

lucky dip
crossbar challenge
sponge throwing
speed stacks
guess the weight of the cake
guess the photo

The food was really tasty, plus this year there was a live band to enjoy they were great, We also got a free burger, cake and drink. Our stall was the guess the weight of the cake and guess the photo stall.

At y5 camp we had a great water fight with a fun game capture of the flag.
We roasted marsh mallows and some were burnt but still tasty.The night was loud
but fun,despite the scary story 75% were scared. Before the story we made doughnuts out of bread.
One of the best parts was the role play.
We all had very interesting characters, who we had to act like for the evening.

Next morning we packed up and went home.

Everyone enjoyed themselves at year five camp most people enjoyed the water fight the most.

Most people wanted to stay longer.

On the 3rd of July 2009 Year 5 had there camp/BBQ. We camped on the field at are school.It was really fun because we toasted marshmallow's and chewest on the camp fire.The tents were funky! We named the tents they were called Fruit slushy tent,cherryade tent,cheeky monkeys,blue boys,cc clan and pocker tent.On the saturday we had a treasure hunt it was so fun also we had a water battle that was so so so fun teem red won the battle my teem after we did a cowboy murder mistorey that was fun to luke chris were the murders.

The 3rd to the 5th 2 nights 3 days we slept in freezing cold weather, joggers, jumpers and socks were slept in.

We sat around the fire talking and toasting marshmallows.We even toasted grapes and

chewitts.

On Saturday we had a water fight and a mystery murder game .Slick o' Hare (Luke) and Clem (Chrisopher) were the murders it was so so so much fun finally we got some sleep ,well I known I did.

The 3rd to the 5th of July was year 5 camp. It was sooooo cool and sooooo much fun!!! On Friday the 3rd of July after the BBQ year 5 set some tents up. Then we got dressed and sat round the fire toasting marshmallows ,they were so nice.

In the morning we got dressed and went to breakfast we had a full English breakfast it was soo good. Mrs Dolman Mrs Gibson cooked it. Then we had a treasure hunt it was fun. Then some people went to Tescos to buy lunch. Then some people helped Mrs Dolman to prepare the food then we had it. After that we had a water fight, it was fun. Then we got ready for the Murder Mystery. It was time for the Murder Mystery. I was sooo excited. We played our game after dinner. We got changed and had donuts round the fire and did a spooky story then went to bed.

The next morning we packed ore bags, got dressed and went to breakfast it was croissants and they were soooo nice. After that we all went home!!!!!!!!

Year 5 Camp and BBQ 09!

On Friday 3rd of July we had Year 5 Camp and our Family BBQ! I'll start with the BBQ...... Friday evening was one of the best evenings of Year 5. The atmosphere was really good. Everybody enjoyed eating hot dogs, burgers, cakes and ice cream. Also, and I think everyone will say the same, thank you for the live music and the patient neighbours too! The stalls were also exciting. Sponge throwing and the Lucky Dip were very good (all the others were good too though!).

Eventually, people started to go back home and that meant that our hot chocolate and marshmallows were on the way. When we went to bed it was fun because Bree and I stayed awake for ages!

In the morning, at around 6.30am we had to "earn" our breakfast! When we got our breakfast kit was worth while! Mrs Dolman and Mrs Gibson made everyone a full English Breakfast!!!!! It was very, very nice! Then we had a tent inspection. This meant cleaning and tiding our tents. Mr Lavis came around judging every body's tent. We then did other stuff. Our Lunch was also delicious! The best thing was the water fight because we went into teams and we had a flag. With this flag we keep it in the teams castle. Another entertainment was the Murder Mystery. I was Minnie May Adams and the murders were Luke and Christopher! In the evening we had donuts and a spooky story! I slept in Sophie-Lou's, Katie's and Alisha's tent. We were all quite worried about the story!

On Sunday we over-slept and I had croissants for breakfast.

On Friday the 3rd of July it was BBQ time!!!!!!!!!! There were burgers, hot dogs, cakes and drinks!

Whilst the BBQ was happening year 5 and there families (not forgetting Mr Lavis!) were also pitching tents. We had so much fun, we had breakfast (a full English one of course!), had a tent inspection, a treasure hunt, me and my tent crew had the most points on the chart and went to our local supermarket, Tesco for lunch! We had some rolls, crisps, fruit and vegetables!

After lunch we had a break, chatting playing and lazing about in our tents!

It was time for our next activity... a water fight!

I got soaked! Everyone kept on throwing wet sponges, shooting me with their pistols and throwing cups of water at me!

That evening we had our Murder Mystery party! For tea we had jacket potatoes and the murderer was (or were Christopher and helped by Luke!)

I was an Indian called Runs Like A Deer and Liam's Name was Sheriff Abe Blane.

Sitting round the camp fire we made doughnuts with jam and chocolate spread inside, they were yummy! When we had finished our doughnuts Mr Lavis told us a scary story that was really quite funny!

Then we went to bed, it took me about 3-4 hours to actually get to sleep and I woke up at about half past 5!

On Sunday we had another tent inspection, packed up the rest of our tents, had breakfast and waited for our parents to arrive!

For breakfast I had a croissant and a pane au chocolate, they were delicious!

Emily had come back from her holiday on Friday and so she handed out some rock(as in the sweet of course!)

Eventually our parents came and I went to sleep that day at 8.30pm and woke up at 11 am in the morning!

At year 5 camp I had lots of fun. My favourite thing was the water fight I really enjoyed. In my tent we won the treasure hunt and the tent inspection which meant my tent got to go to Tessco to buy lunch. We named our tents there was Cherryade, the blue boys, C.C.clan, Fruit slushy, the poker tent and the Cheechy monkeys. On the day that we were going home Igave out some rock and we all went home. I had lots of fun!

The wonderfull cricket season!!

This season we have had some good cricket matches.We have won all of our matches exept 1 that we have lost.We had to win 1 of our games because

it was against Mrs Thornton's sons school and we won.It was against Mildown.It was the first time that Mildown lost a match.We lost 1 of our matches against Spetisbury but they are good.Yesterday Monday 6th of July we were supposed to play Dumbery but unfortunately

it was called of because of the rain.

Y5 Camp 2009

On the 3rd July the school had a BBQ. After the BBQ y5 had a camp, we had a camp fire before we went to bed, we toasted marshmellows over the fire and some people toasted chewitts, weird!

After that we went to bed, most people didn't get any sleep.

In the morning we had to tidy our tents ready for tent inspection which we got points on how tidy they were.All points were added up after other games. First (before tent inspection) we played games to win our breakfast then we had breakfast then finally tent inspection.After that we were given a clipboard and a sheet with some questions on it. They were given out in groups 1 per tent the answers were in the school somewere. Then there was a picture version . After that they added up the scores the tent called cherryade won that meant they got to go to Tesco to buy some food for lunch. When they got back a small group went and prepared the lunch, once that was done we ate lunch. After lunch we had lots of games and about half an hour later we had a water fight (we all got very wet) the red team won. After the water fight we all got dry and into our cowboy clothes ready for later. We all had lots of fun. We all liked trying to work out who the murderer was. We found out that it was Luke and Christopher. Then we all had a little fire and had dounuts, then we went to bed. In the morning we had to pack all our bags to go home. We had breakfast then we all sat outside to wait for our parents. Emily gave us some rock sticks and we went home.( we had loads of fun)

As part of our literacy work, we have been writing narrative for a sort animated film called The Piano.

We used a pesentation programme to import freeze frames from the film and wrote our own voice overs. We had done lots of presentation work for this thinking about what the characters would say and how they would feel and how camera and film techniques are used.

VE DAY STREET PARTY

Plans are well underway for our VE Day style street party on Friday. We are all very excited about acting out our own street party as if it was 1945!

We have done lots of research to make our party as authentic as possible and are now busy planning costumes , deciding what food to bring (not easy with rationing!) making decorations and deciding on what entertainment we will have.

We have been learning some WWII songs for a sing along and have learnt some simple waltz and swing dancing moves.

We know we are going to have such a great time - hope to see you there!!!

What a busy couple of weeks we have had - we are very sorry for not posting sooner!

Last week was Enterprise Week. In Formula Base we studied Fairtrade and how it helps improve the lives of farmers in developing countries and we made masquerade masks to sell at the enterprise market to raise money for Comic Relief.

Here is our week in pictures:

We learnt about Fairtrade chocolate and about how much of the money from a £1 bar of chocolate actually goes to the cocoa farmers. We even got to try the chocolate!

We carried out a survey when planning our masks designs to see what materials, designs and colours people preferred. We then recorded our results in graphs and made conclusions from our findings.

We advertised our product in assembly. We wrote and recorded radio adverts.

Thanks to the sun! Shadows!

We were very thankful that the sun came out from behind the clouds today so that we could measure the shadows! On Monday we planned an investigation around the question, how do shadows change over the course of the day? Unfortunately we had, up until now, been unable to carryout our measurements because it had been very cloudy.

Finally today the sun decided to come out and play and we were able to go to the playground and make our measurements taking into account how to make our test fair. There were a couple of occasions when we had to wait patiently for the sun to shine down on us but we are now able to look at our results and draw some conclusions from them.

My Alien creature

This week we have all entered a competition to win a nintendo ds and a education pack. We had to pretend that we were on an island called Cloudipia , sweatopia, ice-otopia and cavernopia and we had to design a creature that could live in one of them places. My creature is called Leafter and it lives in Cloudopia. Clouopia is warm damp and has giant trees. For my creature life would be very hard. Our creatures had to have something that could help them survive and my creature has some protection plates to stop it drying out and it also has some antennas to help it detect its enemies. My creature eats fruit and Monkeys eat my creature. My creature can build a nest out of leaves and lays eggs. It also breathes through its skin.

This week we have been working towards a competition called Darwin in Space for National Science and Engineering Week. We had to imagine that Charles Darwin had discovered an alien planet where new life exists. There are four islands on the planet. Each is completely different and far away from the others-one is a desert, anther very cold, another hot and tropical and the last one covered in mountains and caves.

We had to invent an alien creature for one of these environments and write about how it is suited to living there.

Crazy Rotations

This afternoon we learnt about how day and night are made. We learnt that the Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours. When our part of the Earth is facing towards the Sun we have day and when we face away we have night.

We worked with a partner to demonstrate this - one of us was the Sun and one of us was the Earth. We used scientific vocabulary in our explanation. It was quite tricky stuff!

The Earth and Beyond

It is science week in Formula Base and our topic is The Earth and Beyond. We are finding out lots of interesting facts about the place of Earth in our solar system. For example today we found out that the Earth is 150,000,000 km from the Sun.

To get some perspective of this distance we made a scale drawing of the sun and then using a scale of 150m = 1,000,000km we used a trundle wheel to measure how far the Sun would be from Earth (Mrs Thornton was the Earth spinning on its axis!). The field measured 50m so we worked out that if we walked down the field three times this would be 150m and would represent the distance of the Earth to the Sun.

We thought that 150m might be approximately the distance to Tesco from school so if you multiply that by 1 million that is how far it is to the Sun! Wow!

Pantomime Time!

As part of our literacy work we have been learning about stories from other cultures. We have been reading One Thousand and One Arabian Nights by Geraldine McCaughrean. In this book Shahrazad tells King Sharhryar a story every night to postpone her execution. It includes stories like Sinbad the Sailor and Ali Baba. As many of theses stories are often reproduced as pantomimes we thought we would write our own.

We decided what we thought the features of pantomimes are and drew up a list. We used this list to write our pantomimes, always checking that we were including all the features.

As we got more excited about our work we decided to act them out. This actually helped with our writing and we began to edit and improve our work as we went along.

When we performed our pantomimes to the class there was lots of booing and hissing to be heard!

This year Y5 have been learning about WW2. We have been making Anderson bomb shelters

these are the materials for my shelter:

straw
paper

super glue
shoe box lid
kitchen roll

First cut straw then glue it in between two pieces of paper. Do the same with front and back of it and cut a door and stick with tape. Then super glue to shoe lid.

I am very proud of my work and it took me 3 days to make my bomb shelter.

Lucie's Anderson Air-raid Shelter

For the past few weeks we have been learning about WW2 and for our homework we had to make a Anderson air-raid shelter. It was really fun making it. First I made shelter by folding some cardboard. Then I put tin-foil over the cardboard to make it look like metal. Next I put in some soil and then I stuck some tin-foil to the bottom of the base of the shelter so I could stick green paper over it so it would look like grass.

For the last two weeks for our homework we had to make a anderson air-raid shelter.

This is how I made mine first I got a cardboard box and cut a strip out of the carboard box. Then I got a bit of cloth and cut a square and stuck it in the door way. Next I stuck some brown tissue paper and I crushed up some green tissue paper and put it on top. Then I started to do the garden the last thing I had to do was stick it on the garden. And that is how I made my shelter.

For our homework we had to make an Anderson shelter. We had two weeks to make it and I made it with wire and paper mache and green paint. What I did was I made a base with wire then I put paper mache over it and then when it dried I had to paint it green.

When I started I did not know anything about Anderson shelter but now I know a lot about Anderson shelters I made a good shelter but in my opinion everyones shelter is brilliant. When we were making them we had to make a plan as well and we had to bring it in as well because our teacher wanted to see our plan.

In year 5 this term we are learning about WW 2. For home work we had to make an Anderson air raid shelter. We had to plan our air raid shelter then build one! I looked on the Internet for some pictures and then I asked my dad for ideas.

I used cardboard to to make the air raid shelter then I used paper mache to make a bomb hole and my dad got some twigs for me to stick onto some polystyrene to make trees. Then we got some stones to make rubble. Lastly I made a bed and book. Then I painted it all green and black and I spray painted the air raid shelter silver.

I cut off both sides of a coke bottle and used it for the shape for my shelter

I put lots of paper mache on it.

I painted it brown and silver.

I glued lots of mud on it.

It was so fun and my dad helped me a bit. It was messy but very fun. I thought eveyone's was amazing. Eveyone said really nice things about mine it felt really good. Mine has lots of mud on it.

My name is Faisal and this is how I made my Anderson bomb shelter.

first I cut a shoe box lid and any other piece of card I didn't need for my Anderson bomb shelter with scissors.

Next Iput holes in pieces of card and put toothpicks through them.

To make the bed I did just that but I cut a piece of sponge to make bedding and a piece of cloth to make a blanket.

I made a table just the same and put four toothpicks through the holes I pierced.

I also made a extra fire place.

Over the past 2 weeks we have been making our very own Anderson Air Raid Shelters for home learning. We researched all about them and then made them into a plan. After that we got down to making our fantastic shelters. Everyone came up with loads of great ideas to put with their shelters. Some people put vegetable patches and clothing lines and some people did small farms.

All the shelters looked amazing and very realistic, especially the fact they had a proper surrounding area. My favourite would have to be Alanah's because she put the house, animals, plants, vegetable patch, clothes line, wheelbarrow and lots more! Alanah would have to be very proud because I bet everyone agrees with me!

I made my Anderson shelter very carefully, with a small amount of limited help! Anyway, I made it by taking recycled objects and making them to my plan. I cut out things like trees and bushes and stuck them onto a piece of large cardboard. After making the main structure I painted it. As you can see the shelter was painted a metallic silver/gray, and my trees and bushes a green that i mixed with two or three colours. I had a great time making it and seeing all the other peoples shelters that they brought in.

I enjoyed evaluating mine and Alanah's shelter and I hope everyone had a fun time making them!

Luke's Anderson Shelter

I used all these materials to make my Anderson shelter.

thin cardboard

thick cardboard

corrugated cardboard
a twig

brown paint
black paint
green paint
glue gun or strong glue
grey paint
white paint

This is how i made it, First i got two thick peices of cardboard and stuck them together and that makes the base.

Then I made a template and cut it out and my dad used his glue gun to stick it down (get a responsible adult to do this).

Then I cut out a thin oblong with a curve on the top not a straight edge.

After get two thick peices of cardboard about 1cm wide and stick them down with glue with one edge up to the template and the back peice of the shelter (one on each side).

Then get a thin peice of cardboard and stick it with glue at the two sides and at the top of the shelter.

Next you will need to make a garden wall out of four pieces of thick cardboard,stick two together then stick the other two together, get some thin cardboard and cut it into strips the same size as the wall then stick one on one of the walls and the other on the other.

Now stick one wall on the left side of the base and one on the back of the base. Then do the same but make them lower and stick them on the other two sides they will be the ground level.

Now you will need to put paper mache in the base apart from in front of the door so that no edges on the shelter show.

Anderson shelter spectacular!

Over the past two weeks for home learning we made some fantastic air raid shelters. I took up the whole two weeks given but the end product was worth the time! I really enjoyed doing mine and looking at other shelters my fellow classmates had made. My favourite of all time was Chloe's because she had so much detail and she even made a bench to go inside although everything was excellent! Over all they all looked so realistic and cool, I hope they all go on display so everyone can look and see how amazing they all are!

I made mine with geat care. I spent a while doing my plan and I enjoyed doing the evaluation at school afterwards!

I used loads of cardboard, besides all the plasticine and cocktail sticks! I only used ordinary house hold items which is a form of recycling old junk! I used fake grass, rosemary, soil, twigs from my garden and heaps of paint!

It was so much fun doing it because I love doing junk modelling and is a fun way to recycle, not just putting it in a big box and it being taken away!

For the past two weeks for our homework we have been making Anderson Air Raid Shelters.

We have all worked very hard on them and today we brought them in to show everyone.Everyone was amazed at how great they are! Anderson Air Raid Shelters were used in world war 2 to protect people from the bombs. They had to be covered with at least 15 inches of mud/soil.

If you did not have a garden to put one in you would have a Morrison Shelter which was under your table and had a cloth on top.

Tomorrow we will take some pictures of them and put them on the blog for you to look at.

Wartime Rationing

During 1939 - 1945 (otherwise known as world war two) there were a lot of shortages in lots of everyday items. People would use coupons to obtain clothes and food. This was called rationing.

In other words supplies came more and more hard to get in the local shops. Clothes were in desperate needs within time. Women went far to receive clothing. Some used to draw on clothes so they look like everyone else. To do this they stained their legs with tea and used eyeliner at the back as the seams. We found out some recipes, here is just one of them:

Woolton pie

Ingredients:

1lb diced potatoes

1lb cauliflower

1lb diced carrots

1lb diced Swede

3 spring onions

1 teaspoon of vegetable extract

1 tablespoon of oatmeal

a little chopped parsley

Method:
Cook everything together with just enough water to cover, stirring often to prevent it sticking to the pan , let the mixture cool. Spoon into a pie dish, sprinkle with chopped parsley. Cover with a crust of potato or wholemeal pastry. Bake in a moderate oven until golden. Serve with gravy.

Health Bread

Ingredients:

11/2lb self raising flour

1 teacup sugar

1 breakfast cup of syrup

1 egg

1 breakfast cup of raisins with stones removed

1 breakfast cup of milk

a pinch of salt

Mix together the sugar, flour, salt and raisins. Beat the egg and add into the milk and syrup. Mix all ingredients together. Bake in two well greased loaf tins in a moderate oven for approx 11/2 hours. Slice thinly after a couple of days and serve with butter or margarine. Will keep for a month in a tin.

New laptops!

We are very lucky to have a brand new set of laptops in school. In Formula Base we were given the responsibilty of setting them up for the younger children in the school and checking that they work correctly and of course - they do! These laptops are really going to enhance our learning as we can all be working on them at the same time.

We used them to research about Dunkirk and have also word processed stories and poems about the snow on them.

The Evacuation of Dunkirk

The Evacuation Model is finished! We added sand to our beach for effect and have added toy soldiers and vehicles and are now enjoying playing with the model and re-enacting the evacuation with the toy soldiers, toy military vehicles and our own little ships!

At the beginning of World War II the numbers of men in the British Forces was quite low - certainly not enough to fight the Germans! So men were encouraged to join the forces and fight for their country.

Posters were put up to encourage men to join the forces and also to encourage women to work in jobs where the men would have worked before they went to work. Eventually,as numbers remained low, men were required to join the forces.This was called conscription.

Little Ships

We have been learning about the evacuation of Dunkirk during World War II.

In May 1940 a huge British Expeditionary force of 250,000 men was sent to France to help fight the powerful German advance. The British and French forces became surrounded by the Germans and forced towards the sea and the town of Dunkirk. What would they do? They had three choices - surrender, fight to death or escape! 338,226 troops were evacuated from Dunkirk between 27 May and 4 June 1940. 933 ships took part in the evacuation named operation Dynamo and were called Little Ships.

In Formula Base we are creating a model of Dunkirk. We have looked at pictures of Dunkirk and the Little Ships and are using what we have seen to build the beach scene using various techniques to create the sand dunes, beach and sea. We are also building an armada of Little Ships using junk modelling and paper construction techniques.

Archaeological Dig

We have been fortunate to be able to do some work about archaeology. The site of the new Milldown Primary School is currently being excavated by archaeologists after possible Bronze

Age remains were found. 18 children from years 5 and 6 had the opportunity to visit the site, meet the archaeologists and take part in some activities.

Those children who didn't go to the dig researched the Bronze Age and have produced some fantastic leaflets.

The children will want to tell you more but until then here are some photographs of our morning. The site

We thought that you might like to see some of the displays in our classroom. Of course to appreciate them fully you need to come into our classroom to see them!

We have blacked out the classroom like it would have been in the blitz

When I watched the last episode of Anne Frank I felt like I wanted to just cry. It was so sad I felt like I was there. If I had to go I would pack a teddy, cards and my diary. In our class we are learning about Anne Frank. As you can see, we have done all sorts of things we have made suitcases where we stuck on items like teddies and said why we would need them.At the moment we are finishing off our timelines, reviews and story boards showing the scenes of episode five. We have also written instructions for living in the Secret Annexe. We are coming to the end of Anne Frank now, I will always remember facts about Anne Frank.

When I watched the diary of Anne Frank the TV series, I felt very sorry for Anne Frank and the people in the Secret Annexe because it was so sad living in there for two years, never going out always seing the same things. It must have been horrible living in the secret Annexe especially if they knew they could be caught at any moment. Anne Frank was a very lonely character and I thought it was very cruel of the Germans to make the Jews wear a star and not let them go on public transport or their own car or bike. They also were not allowed public entertainment.

This week we have been learning about Anne Frank's diary .We have watched the TV series and we are reading the book. At the end of the film it was very emotional because they got caught by the Nazis and they all went to different concentration camps.

Learning about Anne Frank makes me feel sad, the last episode was very emotional when they got found out I think that the Diary of Anne Frank was a very good piece of work that was put together and I think it was very successful and I hope everybody liked it as much as me

Learning about Anne Frank has been a very emotional experience. We watched the TV series and imagined what it must of been like in the Secret Annexe. We talked also about what it must have been like going into hiding and what we would have packed. We had to remember that we only had our school bags to carry otherwise we would have been spotted by the German soldiers.
I would have packed: my teddy to cuddle, a notebook and pencil to write and maybe a pack of cards to play with. Anne and her family were wearing most of their clothes when they went into hiding.

When we learnt all about Anne and her family it was extremely emotional. We read passages from the diary and watched all five episodes of The Diary of Anne Frank. Our class and I did lots of work on her including doing a suitcase. We imagined what it would be like to experience being in an annexe for two very long years. I think Anne Frank is just like my heroine because she was always optimistic and even if she were angry she was still a really kind girl. I hope everyone enjoyed learning about Anne just as much as I did! It was very upsetting when the Nazis found all the people hiding with Anne and her family because they got captured and dumped in horrible concentration camps where they were only eating straps of rotten food and they were stripped naked too. Mr. Dussel got gassed and that was much worse because they were trapped.

When I watched the very last bit of the last episode, I nearly went into tears with my Mum and when I watched it at school, I was even closer to being in tragic tears, it was sad in all of the episodes because I thought any moment the Nazis would come and capture them, I was very frightened to bits every step of the way.

The Diary of Anne Frank

We are studying World War Two as part of our Britain Since 1930s project this term and we have been watching the BBC adaptation of the Diary of Anne Frank as well as reading the book and finding out information about her life. We really got into the series and have been able to see and understand what life would have been like for Anne up there in the secret annexe for 2 years.

We have produced lots of work about Anne Frank, including:

A guide to living in the secret annexe

Haiku poems based on the relationship between two of the characters in the annexe

and we are currently working on writing TV reviews for the series.

Every round my men moved the targets 25 paces back.
Soon there were only five who had made it through and my two Norman soldiers were still in.
The mysterious green cloaked man stepped forward to take his shot, "He's a fool if he thinks he can win I better get him."
When I gave the signal two of my strong soldiers appeared.
The man in green took his final shot and hit the bullseye.

Super sound

If you had a headache then Formula base was not the place to be on Thursday afternoon!! We were taking part in a circus of sound experiments based on cool vibrations.

We banged drums and saw how air-vibrating particles made the particles beside them (in this case rice) vibrate as well. We dangled forks from our ears, inflated balloons, said 'Ahhhh', made waves with a tuning fork and plucked rulers. Sounds like fun? It was!

In our literacy lessons this week, we have been studying poetry and the last few days we have been looking at riddles.

Can you work out the answers to the riddles above?

After looking at riddles by various poets, we set about writing our own. We talked about what riddles are and the type of language they use. We each chose something to write a riddle about and decided this should be something concrete rather than a feeling or emotion. We then brainstormed our word writing down anything that came to mind to do with that word. We tried to think of all our senses.

Next we choose three of the words we had brainstormed and used a thesaurus to find synonyms for these words.

We then tried to use some figurative language (similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia) to describe our word.

Finally we tried to imagine ourselves as our word and write some sentences describing what we do.

We are just at the point of writing our riddles up after our planning so watch this space...

For our activity we made pirate treasure maps. On Thursday in preparation, we 'aged' our paper to make our maps look old. To do this we carefully tore round the edges of the paper to make them look ragged then we sponged tea and coffee over it to stain it.

On Friday we had a brainstorming session (we like brainstorming in formula base) and decided what features we should have on our map. We then set to work drawing intricate compass roses and remembering that X marks the spot.

One afternoon this week we took part in a variety of workshops about Trompe L'oiel. There were four workshops looking at different ways of using perspective when drawing. Have a look at our photos of the work in progress. I think you'll agree that we are great artists!

Graffiti art Display

Formula Base had the task of creating a display in the ICT suite.

We decided to display some of the graffiti art that we have created on the computer. We used a site on the internet called graffiti Creator to create graffiti art of our names and also drew some pictures using the spray can function on microsoft paint.

We have also displayed some graffiti by some other artists that we have looked at on the internet. There is also a powerpoint presentation about the history of graffiti and the different styles used.

Writting in the style of Roald Dahl

To complete our study of the significant author Roald Dahl, we have planned and written our own stories in the style of Roald Dahl. We discussed Roald's style and decided on some writing tips. We decided that Dahl's books were popular because:

they make you laugh
they make you squirm
they keep you enthralled
they make you think
they hook the reader
they make you suspicious

We also noted the different ways in which Dahl started his stories - did he get straight into the action like in the BFG or did he introduce the characters like in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

We also discussed how Dahl's stories were full of DAD - Description, action and dialogue.

We tried to use as many Dahl-like features in our stories as possible and we have done very well.

We also put into practise what we have been learning about punctuating dialogue and writing complex sentences. What a lot we had to think about!

Humphrey wandered around until he heard a thumping sound. It was coming nearer and nearer every second, Humphrey was terrified. Now he could hear tiny voices getting louder and louder chanting, "hup, two, three, four'' repeating it again and again and again. Quickly he raced behind a tree but it was too late they, whoever ''they" were, had spotted him! like a bolt of lightning, he hid fully behind the tree then, gradually peered round just to find ...hamsters!

The evil twins put a slimy worm under the nice twins pillow but what was going to happen in the morning when the twins find out? "Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Get it off! Get it off!" screamed Casey. "It's going in my hair"

"I have one too," yelled Kirsty. "Get it out, get it out! I smell the work of the Tweevils here!"

The giants are finished!

Well we have finished our giants and they look fantastic.

We carefully put the finishing touches to them trying all the time to keep them in Roald Dahl's wonderful style and making them as grotesque as possible - check out the warts, hairy armpits and noses and the dripping blood after chomping on a child!

This week we have been working on the BFG.We went into groups and made our own giants we used materials, paints and straw.We used ideas from the other giants in the BFG,at the end we cut our giants out.Most people used string, not white but coloured.
